NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, famous for bravely speaking emphatically when others were silent, joined the platform where millions of other people make their voices heard in 140 characters or less—Twitter.
Jumping into the Twittersphere with the handle of @Snowden, Snowden’s first Tweet was a very simple pronouncement:
Snowden garnered 963,000 followers in less than one day. On the other hand, the NSA, which has been operating a Twitter account for nearly a year, only has 105,000 followers.
The former CIA security expert and NSA contractor summed up his transition to worldwide privacy advocate in his Twitter bio: “I used to work for the government. Now I work for the public.”
Welcome to Twitter, Edward Snowden. May your vigorous voice and fearless dissonance continue to inspire the world.
